We read in Acts 8 last week that Philip was having a city wide revival with
salvations, miracles and signs and the city was full of joy. Let’s pick up the
story in Acts 8:9: A man named Simon had been a sorcerer there for many years,
amazing the people of Samaria and claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone,
from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as "the Great One—the Power
of God." 11 They listened closely to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic. I need to remind you of this fact; God hates witchcraft and any demonic activity of the supernatural like Ouija boards, tarot cards, séances and even oroscopes.
God said this in Ex 22:18 KJV Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. 19 Whosoever
lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death. God places the sin of witchcraft with
the sin of bestiality or sexual relations with animals. The devil is very deceiving in this area from shows on the Disney channel to the theatres and books being written today. Vampire and witch movies are at an all time high it seems because people love the supernatural, the unexplainable but it is the devil’s scheme to deceive people. Friends, shows and books like Harry Potter may seem innocent but it’s full of demonic poison allowing demonic activity into your home. If the devil can get in an inch, he will eventually take a mile.
This man Simon was very powerful in the city and some even claimed his power came
from God when it was totally demonic. God doesn’t need a crystal ball or have a
need to read the palm of your hand. Stay away from all demonic activity. All of the activities are very destructive in the lives of those who participate. God has a Supernatural far more powerful, far more knowledgeable than anything the devil can offer. So seek after God and His Presence and live a supernatural life of the Holy
Spirit. He will blow your mind!
12 But now the people believed Philip's message of Good News concerning the Kingdom
of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed. Remember signs, wonders and miracles will bring people to Jesus and when God does a miracle in our lives we need to share it. Testimonies of God’s amazing healing, saving and delivering power bring people to the Lord, even sorcerers!
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted
God's message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
As you read this passage carefully it’s easy to see truth that denies some teachings that believe that once you get saved you get everything God has for you. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2) and being born again are two different supernatural experiences.
You can be saved and never filled with the baptismal of the Holy Spirit but you can never be filled with the Spirit without being saved. We can get to heaven without being filled with the Holy Ghost but it’s hard to live victorious without being full of the Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on
people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 "Let me have this power, too," he exclaimed, "so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!" 20 But Peter replied, "May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God's gift can be bought! 21 You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. 22 Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, 23 for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin." 24 "Pray to the Lord for me," Simon exclaimed, "that these terrible things you've said won't happen to me!"
Simon the sorcerer, even though he believed in Jesus, still needed to have a heart
change because he wanted the power of God without seeking first the presence of
the Lord. It’s dangerous to want to be used by God without wanting to know God.
Private intimacy with the Father produces public power. But make sure your
motives are pure for wanting to be used in God’s Kingdom!
Prayer point: Father use me in your Kingdom but most of all let me know you as my
